2006 E83 X3 2.0d - Disable EGR Valve. As we all know, the engine in the X3 2.0d is very sensitive of getting block with nasty exhaust gasses/smudge from the EGR valve. I've seen many X3 where we had to remove de cylinder head to get it cleaned, just because it was so full of nastiness! The only way to keep you X3 clean is to disable the EGR valve.
For BMW 325Ci X3 330Ci 330i 325xi 325i Pierburg EGR Valve CSW (Fits: 2005 BMW X3) Guaranteed Correct Part, Highest Quality, Best Warranty. (2) $124.41. Was: $174.00.
As the heart of the EGR system, the EGR valve reduces the overall NOx emissions that leave the tailpipe. Common symptoms of a bad EGR valve include a lit check engine light, engine performance problems, and spark knock. There are three steps to testing the EGR valve: checking DTCs, carrying out a visual inspection, and testing the valve itself.
They have the same issues (check the E90POST\M47 M57 diesel forum); however the root cause is considerably different - on diesels the cause is EGR. The solution is also different due to the different head and intake design It's hard to say how many diesel owners are having problems, as BMW doesn't say and these forums are not representative at all.
If your BMW engine is struggling to accelerate, chances are its EGR valve is not working correctly. If you want to know more about the causes and signs of EGR valve failure in a car, you may go through this graphical presentation.
The repair tech at BMW said it happens enough that BMW issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) to all the dealerships so they know how to troubleshoot and assess damage. Based on that TSB, the tech recommended I replace the EGR valve, EGR cooler, throttle body, particulate filter, etc, etc. The entire list of parts totaled $6500.

3 years ago after diesel sensor leak and £10,000+ bill to fix (covered by extended warranty) I asked my dealer if there was a connected issue as 268,000 cars had been recalled for an EGR cooler
Luckily, still no problems in driving (or not that I can notice). But I had a similar code on my E46 (M47 engine) along with few others and replacing the EGR pressure converter (#11747796634) resolved the problem. I was thinking of doing the same here on my tractor (also as a precaution, since these old valves do die) but I got lost in the process.
